AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE (I’LL HAVE THE CALAMARI)
G2 Kunsthalle, Leipzig, Germany

The G2 Kunsthalle presents a solo exhibition by Friedrich Kunath, titled AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE (I’LL HAVE THE CALAMARI).

Kunath showcases seemingly ideal landscapes, drenched in romantic and pop-cultural references that, upon closer inspection, annul their perfectionism. By intertwining historical epochs with contemporary mass cultures, he creates an anachronism that unites past and present, forming a universal timeline.

Kunath draws places of longing, often wrapped in the guise of German Romanticism or reminiscent of poster motifs from the 1990s: radiant sunsets, green, serene forest scenes, or snow-covered winter landscapes. He uses these landscapes as metaphors for inner feelings and states, functioning as open projection surfaces for viewers.

Kunath’s multilayered images tell stories of landscapes that appear as a synthesis of German Romantic painting and the brilliance of American pop culture. Laden with symbolic objects from the past and simple text and cartoon motifs, they explore interpersonal relationships, conscious and unconscious perception mechanisms, and the reality and romanticization of memories.
